What To Consider When Buying Lighting and Fans

How much light do I need?
There is a proven formula for calculating the proper amount of general light (usually expressed as the number of watts) you should have in each room or area of your home, using some simple math.

Multiply the length times the width of the room.  Then, multiply that number times 1.5.  That gives you the amount of wattage you need to light the room properly for general illumination.
Example:  A room is 12 ft. x 16 ft. (12 x 16 = 192).  Then multiply 192 x 1.5 = 288 watts.  That means an 8-light chandelier using 40-watt bulbs would give 320 watts, which is even more light than needed.
For specific task lighting in areas where stronger light is needed, multiply the area’s square footage by 2.5 rather than 1.5 to find the needed wattage.  A kitchen work island or a desk area where schoolwork is done are examples of task areas in your home.  Typically a bedroom or living room will require less light then other rooms in your home.

Why Buy a Ceiling Fan?
Adding a ceiling fan can be the most Energy Saving addition to any room.  The potential to reduce energy costs can be up to 40% by using ceiling fans. Ceiling Fans can be used in the summer and winter.  During summer a room will feel up to seven degrees cooler with a “wind chill” effect. Note: set thermostat to a higher tempurature to save on air conditioning costs.  During the winter, run a fan in reverse to re-circulate hot air trapped in the ceiling.  Note: set thermostat lower to save on heating costs.

Design Tips:

While you're searching for your ceiling fan, make note of your color scheme; If you have Mahogany furniture, you'll want to pick a fan with the same tones to complement the room.  Fans have become as important as furniture and can help express your personality, while also being a great investment.  So take your time and search the various designs and colors before making your decision.
